He was born in Singapore on January 1973. His mum worked in an emporium and his dad worked in a restaurant. He has a younger brother and they lived in a 3-room HDB flat at Bedok North Ave 1, a neighborhood in the eastern part of Singapore. He was born Ang Choon Leng and earned his moniker while serving National Service as his name badge read C L Ang.
HIs army mates started calling him Clang and soon everyone knows him by Clang or John Clang.
